Sonitec Inc. offers the Vortisand, centrifugal filtration system for various process water filtration applications. Vortisand is fully automated, compact and provides removal of solids as small as 0.45 micron. It also reduces backwashing frequency and amount of water used, the company says. The technology is applicable in pre-filtration in front of reverse osmosis equipment and more applications.

    • We developed and marketed the Vortisand filter for suspended solid removal down to sub micron range at a true 90% efficiency in cooling and process water filtration applications.
    The VORTISAND® Process water filtration technology: provides sub micron filtration as low as 0.2 micron removal and our line of Membrane separation products: are used for many types of aqueous applications.         		VORTISAND® uses a tangential inlet to introduce water with a swirling action. The water centrifugal separators help to remove the suspended solids and significantly increase the effective filter surface within the tank. This creates a concave surface on the sand media and increases the total filtration surface area.

    Very few ski resorts having snow-making systems need to install a process water filtration system as they usually pull their water supply from rivers with continuous flowing water and low turbidity. The water supply comes from the local storage dam that is used to generate electricity which affects the water level throughout the winter.

    VORTISAND® filters better and faster because of its unique process water filtration principle and the fact that it is constructed in the same way as slow multimedia filters (3 to 5gmp/sq.ft.), VORTISAND® can remove suspended solids as small as 2-micron nominal (0.002 mm) at a speed of 15 gpm/sq.ft. This ultra-fine filtration is unequaled by any conventional multimedia or horizontal filter.
